MagSafe is a buzzword, and someone has probably applied it to things that don't deserve it. So what exactly separates a real MagSafe case from the average one, and is it worth getting for you?
So the main difference: the magnet ring!

A real MagSafe case comes with a perfectly aligned ring of magnets embedded in the back camera cutout, designed to line up exactly with the magnets inside MagSafe-enabled iPhones (iPhone 12 and later). That simple alignment is what allows your phone to snap in place on MagSafe chargers, wallets and car mounts while charging at full MagSafe speeds (up to 15W on supported chargers).
Third party "magnetic" case that is not properly MagSafe certified likely uses weaker or misaligned magnets. Your phone may still stick like a magnet to the charger but you'll see slower charging, accessories that don't fit as snugly or slipping off more easily.

When MagSafe is genuinely useful
- You use wireless charging pad or car holder regularly
- You want to use a MagSafe wallet with, dang it if you don't have an individual phone grip
- You change accessories regularly — a snap-on system is quicker than plugging in each time
When it doesn't matter much
- You charge with a cable first and foremost
- You do not use at all magnetic accessories
- Budget is tight and you want to spend it on drop protection instead
A practical tip

If you get a MagSafe case, check its connection before going all-in with daily use, put it on the charger and see if it snaps without any wobble. An ideal case should click into place with a sharp, authoritative snap not an airy rattle.
